MEMORANDUM ON THE MISSING PORTIONS OF THE STATUE

OF QUEEN VICTORIA, HONG KONG, RECOVERED IN OCTOBER, 1946, FROM

JAPAN.

The missing parts of this statue are:

(a) The Crown 3

(b)

Three ornaments surmounting the back of the Throne;

(c)

Right arm and part of the Sceptre ;

(d) Portion of the Orb in the left hand;

(0) Shield panel on the left side of the Throne;

(f) A panel in the back of the Throne.

The location and fixing arrangements of the missing parts

are illustrated in the enclosed photographs and described in the

following notes:-

Photograph No. 1. (See paragraph 1 (a) and (b)).

Shows the seating for the Crown on the Queen's head;

this sinking is about 51⁄2" in diameter and just inside the perimeter

there are four 4" diameter threaded fixing pins.

The three sockets surmounting the back of the throne are

also shown, those at the sides are 34" wide by 6" deep and 2′′ high

with holes for fixing front and back. The centre socket is 5′′ square

x ** high, again with holes front and back; there are markings on the

curved horizontal surface at each side of this box, (and three threaded

holes) indicating that the centre ornament extended for about 8" to

each side of the socket. A full sized detail of these features is

attached (see Drawing No. 1).

Shows the socket for the missing right arm. This is at the

elbow joint and the arm was made to slide over it and was fixed by

screws or dowels at the top and bottom of the socket. The base of the

sceptre is also shown; it has a projecting 5/8′′ diam. x 2" long threaded

pin.

diameter hole with a small grub screw bisecting it.
